Zeikos ZE-TR67A Review by Jaime L. Blasini Merlo (Puerto Rico)

Excellent for beginners. Ligthweight, sturdy, easy to use. Good for the price. I used for my Digital camera (Canon S3 IS) and camcorder (JVC HD Everio GZHD500). Comfortable for my stature (5'11"). Extends 67" and folds to 26.2". Weight 2.79 lbs. Deluxe case included.

Zeikos ZE-TR67A Review by Steven Gibson

Very pleased with the quality of this tripod for an economical price. Lightweight and easy to use.

Zeikos ZE-TR67A Review by J. H. Marshall "johnshyama" (USA)

I shouldn't perhaps blame Zeikos for my mishap but rather the Nikon dealer in New York who sold me my D700 along with this tripod in a package. If you want to use this camera and attach to it a high quality, and therefore probably heavy lens, don't even think about this tripod. In Sedona, although set up on tarmac on the flat, it was caught by the wind and blew over when my back was turned for a moment. The repair to the camera and lense was over $400. Please be warned. That is all I ask.

Customer Reviews

HP CB277AN Review by C. Pierce

I got this cartridge for my HP DeskJet 932c. I'd been using the regular color ink cartridges and got good photos but thought this new ink would be even better. It's NOT! What's more, when I print on plain paper in "draft" mode, the color portions are wrong. I've cleaned the printer contacts twice according to HP instructions, ran all the utilities, and still cannot print in draft mode with any color. However, B&W in draft mode is great, as long as there are no color graphics or text. I realize this printer is old, but I didn't have a problem with it until I switched to this cartridge. Huge ripoff!

HP CB277AN Review by G. Wells "Unhappy Camper" (Golden, CO, US)

I print a lot of fairly large (13x19 paper) photography prints on my old HP Deskjet 1220 C printer. I was using the standard 78 cartridge, but recently changed to the 78 plus. I partly made this switch for the color, but mostly for the longer fade resistance. Unfortunately, only about 50% of the cartridges work correctly for me. The main problem is streaking and the fact I have to print a number of "sacrificial" prints before any look usable, and that's in those rare cases it prints OK. I just completed a number of "experiments" with two brand new cartridges, including heating them up in the sauna (because I thought maybe it was a temperature thing) and also just printing plain squares of various colors. My conclusion is that I am buying an Epson printer.

HP CB277AN Review by Patrick A. Olivolo (MD)

Have had to throw away two cartridges out of six because the color was so bad. When the color is right it's great but this can get expensive. I just bought two more and will update my comments when I open the next one.

Consumer Griffin Technology GB02278 review

Griffin Technology GB02278 Review by P. M. Joppru (Yorba Linda, CA)

When I first saw this, I thought, "so cool and a nifty alternate way to wear my nano." WRONG. As others have noted, it is very bulky and feels tight on my small wrist. What bothers me most however, is that all the pictures show the nano in the case oriented like a regular watch with the face parallel to your arm. If you put it in the case correctly, lining up the hole for the earphones and the indentations for on/off and volume control buttons, it does not look like the pictures. The nano is turned sideways so that if you want to read the screen while it is on your wrist, you have to point your hand straight up or straight down! Very awkward and poorly designed. I am sorry that I purchased it, and will be attempting to return it.

Griffin Technology GB02278 Review by tripletmom

Love the look -- but the band needs to be returned because once we slap on the band, one side of the nano pops out! It could be because my daughter's wrist is small, but not not unusually so (she's 12). It does it on my wrist too, but I have small wrists for an adult. Beware, smaller-wristed (and younger) customers!

Griffin Technology GB02278 Review by sandyc

I gave a new Nano to my 13yr old, who had left is old nano clipped to his shorts...which went through the wash. And, was DOA by the spin cycle two days after Christmas. In a word, it SUCKED! Turns out that this is a large problem for the population of Mom's out there to deal with. The nano is so small and light, it's easy to forget in your pocket, or leave clipped to your shirt.

Since we gave him a new nano AND the slap band for his birthday this October, nothing has landed in the washer - or, the shower for that matter! Finally, something that works for a 13yr old music listener, that calls enough cool attention to itself, to not be left behind. BRAVO!

Griffin's Slap case crosses a wristwatch and a silicone skin to create a unique, fun way to keep your iPod nano (6th generation) close at hand. Slap's flexible, spring-steel band is wrapped in soft silicone. Snap Slap open, then snap Slap shut around your wrist, comfortably self-adjusting to exactly your size. Your iPod is surrounded by a frame of thick silicone that guards against bumps and jolts. Protects iPod nano's Dock connector and volume controls but leaves the headphone port open so you can plug in a listen any time. And speaking of time, you can press the Sleep/Wake button through the frame to check the time or control iTunes. Your iPod nano plus our Slap case work together to create maybe the most useful and entertaining wristwatch ever.

Panasonic SL-SX290 Review

Panasonic SL-SX290 Review by "vclaythrne" (New York)

I was very impressed with this player at first. It was a bargain, and nice and lightweight. I was thrilled to find that even scratched CDs didn't skip and played well. However, I noticed after about two months (without having used it excessively), the CDs, even new ones, did not read as well as they had done at the start. 4 months later, it will play about 40 seconds of a song, and then the CD will just keep spinning with no sound, and no reading on the display save for the "Sorry" message. I was careful handling the product, and certainly didn't use it 24/7, so I can't understand why it doesn't function properly anymore. Now I have to search for another walkman!

Panasonic SL-SX290 Review by Gadgester "No Time, No Money" (Mother Earth)

This is a basic portable CD player that features CD-R/RW playability, 35-hour playback on 2 AA batteries (even cheap ones!), 40-second anti-skip system (cannot be turned off, unlike previous basic models from Panasonic), and three-phase equalizer (normal, bass boost, "train"). Of course, you can program the playlist as well as disable accidental button presses. It can play MP3s that are burned into audio CDs on CD-R/RW discs, but not MP3 files directly. No big deal since it's real easy to burn audio CDs anyway. The lid color is blue, and many people think it looks cute, but not overly so.

Solid build quality, excellent sound quality (esp. on good headphones), long battery life, and ease of use make this the best basic CD player out there today. Made in Japan with a great price tag.

Panasonic SL-SX290 Review by "kmeyer99" (Forest Park, IL USA)

I've had this CD player for over a year now, and it works OK, but I am pretty sick of a few of its unexpected "features", namely: (1) You have the volume on 3 while you listen to a CD. Then, you turn the player off. Then, you turn the player back on, but when it plays again, it plays at volume 13 for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, your ears get an unexpected blast. (2) You insert a new CD into the player and hit the play button. For no apparent reason, the player starts playing track #7 instead of track #1. (3) You play a CD with the bass-boost "off". Then, you turn the player off. Then, you turn the player back on again. You guessed it -- for no apparent reason, the bass-boost is now on.

Panasonic SL-SX290 Portable CD Player Description

The Panasonic SL-SX290 portable CD player was made for active use, incorporating Panasonic's "No Skip" anti-skip system. "No Skip" construction was designed with rubber bushings to absorb the shock, while a thin and light anti-skip mechanism and anti-skip digital servo system add to the defense. It also boasts a digital-servo recovery system that can detect even a fractional difference in the CD's tracking and quickly recovers before it has a chance to "derail."

The system is bolstered by an improved set of error correction chips together with a 40-second backup memory buffer. When a vertical shock (along the axis of the disc) causes a tracking error, the system plays back music from the memory buffer until correct tracking resumes.

Since the SL-SX290 enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs, you can enjoy listening to CDs that you make in addition to conventional audio CDs. This unit also features programmable playback (up to 24 tracks, in your chosen sequence), random play, repeat play (either one song or an entire disc), as well as S-XBS bass boost and Train mode (which cuts high frequencies for less externally audible or less fatiguing sound). The player includes a "pop-up" disc eject mechanism for easy disc removal.

The CD player uses two AA batteries (not included), which last up to 35 hours. You can also power the unit with an optional 4.5V AC/DC adapter, which lets you plug your portable CD player into an outlet.

With a heat-resistant polycarbonate body, the SL-SX290 can be used in most outdoor settings without worry of damage. However, the unit should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

What's in the Box
CD player, stereo headphones, and a user's manual.

  • Heat-resistant polycarbonate body; up to 35 hours playback on 2 AA batteries (not included)
  • CD-R and CD-RW compatibility, 1-bit MASH digital-to-analog converter
  • "Pop-up" disc eject, hold switch, and multiple playback modes
  • Panasonic S-XBS bass boost
  • 40-second antiskip buffer and 24-track programmable CD memory

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom Consumer Report

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom Review by D. J. Craig (Washington state)

I LOVE this Camera. I bought it to use on my recent road trip to Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. The camera took great photos, even the ones when we were riding down the road at 65-70mph. They were not blurred. I bought a 2 GB. chip for it, so even on the 7.1 setting I could still take over 1000 photos. It was nice to have the 4x zoom lens, that can actually go up to 16x.
Before the road trip, I took this to a ballgame, and was able to get better and closer shots of the players at bat, than my friends 35mm camera with a zoom lens.
I am very satisfied with this camera. And you can't beat the price.

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom Review by trainer (TX)

My Panasonic Lumix died on vacation, I needed a small camera that took an SD card and either the same battery as the Lumix or AA batteries. I took it out of the box and went hiking and was impressed by the ease of use and the AWESOME macros it took. The only drawback is that it does not have Image Stabilization which is makes for a few fuzzy photos when zooming in of a moving thing like an eagle flying or waterfall at a distance...you have to be VERY steady or use a tripod for those shots. All-in-all, I would NOT go back to the Lumix because it had no viewfinder and in full sun you could not see what you were shooting and it had issues with darkness like in museums (exposure issue). I would recommend this camera to the individual looking for a small size, easy-to-use general user who takes a lot of people photos because of the "face recognition" feature to aid in focusing. It is best at macros, absolutely top notch for the person who wants to take photos of flowers or bugs or tiny things. It gives photos a yellow/orange tinge at night indoors under low incandescent lighting which can be adjusted with software. I have looked many months before for a camera and have not found a digital camera that is a better value than the Canon PowerShot a560 camera for the general purpose user that uses SD cards. It is quick to take the shot and with a high quality (fast) SD card, it writes to disk quickly (meaning you press the button and you will not likely miss the shot if you've got a steady hand). For sports shots or moving subjects, I might recommend a camera with a sports shot mode to freeze the subject and with Image Stabilization.

Canon PowerShot A560 7.1MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom Review by Cap'n Stoob "Stoob" (USA)

This camera is a good compromise in price between the next level up and the lowest level of camera. However, the imaging chip is the same 1/2.5 CCD as can be found in any other comparable camera. The main difference is apparently in the DIGIC III chip, which processes the images to make them look good. Canon has a reputation for solid photography, so I chose this camera to take good photos without having to think a lot about them.

Image Quality: Good

This camera, in the ISO 80 and 100 range, takes great photos. In daylight and bright indoor light, it's nice. At ISO 200, some noise pops up and that's due to the tiny image sensor. ISO 400 and above are super noisy. All in all, a decent performance. However, the color misses a bit of saturation and this can easily be fixed by post-processing.

Build Quality:

Cheap and plasticky. The zoom rocker is hard to control in fine steps. The buttons are well-placed and easy to push.

Hand Feel:

This camera is a delight to hold, even for people with larger hands. It has the battery compartment on the right side, so you can really get a hand on it. Wonderful!

Convenience:

100% awesome. It uses cheap SD cards and AA batteries. This means that you will ALWAYS be able to find batteries in a pinch. The importance of this cannot be underestimated! You can also get a cheap set of AA Ni-MH batteries and carry a spare set just in case. The battery life is great. Where this camera falls a little short is in the case department. The grip is nice for the hand, but this won't fit slimline bags, at all!

Big Flaws:

The camera's BIGGEST flaw and the major reason for losing 2 stars. The screen quality has to be seen to be believed. You won't believe that it can be as low in sharpness and color as it is! The screen is almost useless in composing photos, especially since it washes out in bright light with purple vertical bars on the highlight parts. It's not sharp enough to show you whether something is perfectly in focus, so you have to trust the camera. It's not viewable in sunlight, at all. Big minuses to Canon for cutting corners on the most CRITICAL part of the camera! This screen just doesn't have enough pixels to show the detail from the imaging chip!

Another huge flaw is the softness in the zoom lens at 4x. I turned off digital zoom and took some shots at max zoom. It looked like I had a thin layer of grease on the lens! The blurriness is not acceptable for my photos, so I had to keep myself to about 2.5 to 3x zoom, only.

The movie mode is OK, but doesn't seem as smooth as offerings from other manufacturers. The "smooth" movie mode takes a tiny (320x240) movie at 60fps, but the playback just makes it look like an old silent movie with the unusual speed.

This could have been a 5-star camera with just 100000 more pixels in the LCD screen. As it is, now, this is just an average camera, but should serve well as a pocket or everyday camera.

Numark DJ I/O Reviews

Numark DJ I/O Review by Sid Ananthakrishnan

I bought this based on reading so many awesome reviews! The price was right and it seemed like a good quality sound card. Everything was fine until I plugged it into my Macbook Pro running Lion. All I got was a high pitched screeching sound - I tried everything but I could not get rid of it. So after spending some time googling stuff, I came across this link:

[...]

Basically, it's a known issue and the only fix is uninstalling and reinstalling the sound card driver every time you want to use the DJIO. Freakin' ridiculous. And it doesn't seem like Numark is in a hurry to update their drivers.

So, basically if you have a Mac running Lion, DO NOT buy this until they have resolved the driver issue. You can go their site and check the latest drivers they have (it's Snow Leopard now).

I'm sure this is an awesome sound card , in fact the form factor, and the build quality is really good but it is simply paper weight for me at this time.

Numark DJ I/O Review by D. Gusmer

I bought this a week before I switched to Windows 7. I was using it on Windows Vista Business 64bit and it worked great along with Traktor Pro, however, it doesn't seem to like Windows 7 at all. This could just be a Traktor problem, but all my drivers are up to date and such. When it did work, the sound quality was amazing. I reformatted last night to Windows 7 64bit and have yet to try it out, but I hope it works better than it did on 32bit. If you can it to work, then it is a great product that I would highly recommend. I have many friends that use this, and the week I did have it working it was amazing.

Numark DJ I/O Review by JC

I was researching about a good audio interface for my laptop since I'll DJ in small/medium parties. and I'm glad I picked the Numark DJ I/O. is a good quality device and easy to setup with VDJ pro software. All I have to do was to install the CD software for the drivers (Win XP Pro),plug it via usb to my laptop, configure VDJ software, plug it to my speakers and voila! great sound and good performance. Excellent product!

Bogen 679B information

Bogen 679B Review by M. Pickering (MI, USA)

I have never owned a monopod before, so I had no idea what to look for in this type of product. I turned to the helpful reviews here on Amazon.com to assist me in my selection. It became quite clear that the Bogen-Manfrotto line was the best choice due to the rave reviews they receive. I decided to go with the three section, black anodized model, as it seemed like the best, most cost effective model to choose from here on Amazon. I wanted a carbon fiber model but they were out of my price range.

I am very impressed with this Bogen-Manfrotto monopod. It is fairly light weight, easy to use, quick to setup, and it straps very nicely to my Canon 100DG Bag for Canon SLR Cameras. I can't stress enough just how solid the build is of this monopod. It is strong and shows no sign of fatigue with my Canon 40D digital SLR camera, Canon 580EX flash and my Canon 70-300mm IS/USM lens attached. I think it is important to note that you should mate a quality built swivel/tilt or ball head to this monopod. I chose the Bogen-Manfrotto 486RC2 Compact Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect System for mine, which I am also very impressed with.

I will not go into detail about the specifications of this item, as you can easily find this information in the description here on Amazon. All I can say is, from a users standpoint, this Bogen-Manfrotto monopod is awesome! If you are looking for a high quality monopod for your still or digital camera, I would highly recommend that you purchase this model. Although I have to be honest about the fact that I have no reference to compair this model to, I must insist that I am not basing my review on using lightweight equipment with this monopod. My camera, lens and flash combination place a fair amount of weight on this device, and it has proven to be a rock solid stabilizing device for shooting pictures. For the lost cost of this model I just can't see how you can go wrong.

Bogen 679B Review by Michael Meredith "e-Mike" (St. Louis, MO United States)

While researching which monopod to buy, I looked at a number of products and their reviews. Most had variable percentages of "loved it" or "hated it" comments, and differing ranges of rankings. But the Manfrotto 679B Monopod was unique in that every review (15 of them) ranked this product with five stars. Well add my vote to the unanimous throng!

I've just returned from a vacation that provided an excellent test and the results blew me away. The Manfrotto provides a rock solid base for my digital SLR, giving me some of the best distance photos I've ever taken; without sacrificing comfort for utility. I could quickly extend the sections and then release the pod back into walking mode with minimal effort. It's weight was never a problem, nor did it ever even hint at being cumbersome.

After a while, I even found me using this as a walking stick, something I actually hadn't considered but in the future I'm just as likely to use it without the camera as with.

With many of the alternative products, there seemed to be varying complaints of durability problems, however I didn't see any with this one. And after a week of packing/unpacking and trekking on/off ship I have no concerns about this unit failing me. I suspect that I'll be using the Manfrotto for many years to come.

Bogen 679B Review by Eric D. Brown "Technology Consultant" (Dallas, TX)

This is perfect for anyone needing a medium-weight monopod that can do double duty as a walking stick.

Build quality is very good, although the strap connector busted on day 4 when I dropped it onto concrete. I wish they had used a steel connector rather than plastic.

Fox Racing 29027-001-038 Review by Razorhamster

So, I've only used these for one day but it was a long day of downhill, at least 8 hours of it. These were so comfortable and form fitting that half the time I forgot that they were on. Had a few spills and they protected me very well, I'm almost certain that if it wasn't for these I would have been bleeding profusely. They breathe pretty well and ride very well uphill and downhill. They do seem to irritate the skin just a tad bit on the back of the leg but better than that a hole or a gash.

My roommate has the model before mine and when he compared them he said they were much more comfortable and didn't have to worry about the knee/thigh party getting in the way on uphill stuff.

These are good, I recommend these.

Givenchy 122502 Review by P. Hilley "Dublin Dr Pepper" (N/B Texas)

I have been using Pi since it first came out.I've ran out one time and bought Pi Neo,but did not like it.So I came here to get the real thing.(Pi)

Givenchy 122502 Review by Mike L.

My first review, so bare with me...
so, i purchased my first bottle of the stuff about 10 years ago(i use it sparingly). finally running out. did it go bad/stale? i doubt it. still smells amazing and is just as long-lasting as when i bought it. i did store it properly, so who knows... that's besides the point. i needed a new bottle to replace my last one. i was kind of worried about it being fake, based on a few reviews i've read. i pulled the trigger and bought it through amazon...

got it today.
i looked up a few videos on how to tell fake colognes to see if this was real.

i questioned my purchase because my original bottle(3.3oz) had the Pi symbol towards the bottom of the glass. the one i received(also 3.3oz) had a larger Pi symbol towards the top of the glass. also, the new cologne had a slightly darker tint. i've read that Givenchy had a few different bottle designs for Pi and mine was congruent with all the pics i have seen.

1.) the packaging looks legit. has all the official Givenchy logos/stamps etc. ALTHOUGH, there were parts of the top folding tab on the box that were ripped off by cutting with a razor blade, kind of like when u remove labels from cardboard. idk what that's all about. probably manufactures rules of resale and UPC stuff. shrugs.
2.) i see the bottom of the box has a barcode (some/most? fakes dont have an actual barcode, although it IS easy enough to print one).
3.) there is a serial number stamped into the box, 4 characters long, along with a percentage stamped below that. most fake productions would not spend the money for a stamping machine).
4.) the bottle shape, design, size were exactly the same. to the last detail.
5.) the bottom of the bottle has the SAME 4 digit serial number LASER ETCHED into the bottle. again, fake productions would almost certainly not go to such lengths to make a fake. they want cheap production with maximum profit.
6.) comparing the scent from my almost depleted bottle with my new one, the new one is a tad stronger but has the SAME fragrance, tones, and aromatics.

so there, thats how i was assured my bottle was real. and if i missed anything, feel free to comment. this isn't a 100% foolproof way to determine fakes, it's just enough to put my mind to rest. also, this doesnt apply to EVERY fragrance out there, but it could be used as a reference.

lastly, ENJOY YOUR Pi! THE LADIES LOVE THIS STUFF!!! i've gotten countless compliments when i do wear it.

i hope this has helped you.

Givenchy 122502 Review by Mr. Thomas (Oregon)

I love the scent of this stuff. It's very amazing. I used Gravity for a long time, but more less quit wearing it. I decided to check out a few colognes while in a store the other day and found I liked the initial smell of Pi and Adidas 1. I put some on each arm and walked around for about 15 minutes and the Pi only got better. It is nice and subtle scent that sticks around for a long time. I highly recommend this stuff. I wouldn't tell anyone else around you though, as you'll want to keep this stuff your secret.

KidKraft 15501 Review by Kristi Smith

This stool rocks!!! My son is not quite 2 yet, but looks like a linebacker... so holding him up to wash his hands was starting to be more of a chore!! Most stools out there were too short for him, so I bought this stool and it's just perfect!!! It's very sturdy, easy to assemble, and he's so proud that he can wash his hands and etc. with it! It was easy to personalize too... the wall decal stickers I had left over from doing his room easily went on the stool- no problem. It's perfect!!! LOVE IT!!

KidKraft 15501 Review by Patricia A. Artis

Very sturdy and functional. Easily moved for many uses. My granddaughter loves it!

KidKraft 15501 Review by SC Mom "Sally F" (Blythewood, SC USA)

This stool is a little pricey for a child's step stool, but since it's used in our downstairs bathroom, which is also used for guests, I wanted something nicer that would fit our decor; not a plastic kid's stool with characters on it. My 2-year old daughter loves it, though. It's sturdy enough for her to climb on, and tall enough that she can reach the sink and soap when standing on it. Since using this stool, she has learned to wash her hands all by herself.

The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family Review by Reviewer "Pastor Greg" (PA)

As a child, John R. Rice would come and preach at my church. I remember him and Jack Hyles preaching a Sword conference there. In fact, in one of Hyles' books he mentioned a story that took place while they were speaking there. During a break Rice went missing. Hyles says he found him playing hopscotch with a child down the street. While in college I lived in the "John R. Rice Hall."

The school declared a day of mourning when Rice died in 1980. The college president was one of the speakers at his funeral. I got Rice's newspaper, The Sword of the Lord for many years. I saved every one until my wife finally declared the stacks were taking up too much space. So I read this book (actually I received a .pdf early release from the author) with much anticipation. I found it fascinating, thought provoking and a little sad.

Andrew Himes is the grandson of famed evangelist John R. Rice. His father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, five nephews and many cousins are or were Baptist preachers. His mother was one of Rice's six daughters. He had an insider's view of the early days of independent Baptist fundamentalism and it wasn't all pretty.

As the title states this book is about the roots of fundamentalism in an American family. This isn't a biography of John R. Rice. It goes back much further than he. In fact, this book was uniquely enjoyable to me because not only does it deal with fundamentalism, but American history (particularly Civil War history) as well. He traces his family roots all the way back to Revolutionary War times. Himes does a very fine job of intertwining his personal story as he gives us a historical perspective on the roots of fundamentalism. Each of the first 26 chapters starts with some type of quote referencing the sword of the Lord (the biblical usage, not the newspaper). Some of these are from the Bible, some from sermons, some from other literary sources.

Himes comes across as being honest, about himself, his family, and his famous grandfather. If you are looking for a smear job of Rice, you won't find it here. In spite of the fact that he left fundamentalism (and I would say orthodoxy too) he loved his grandfather (and grandmother). In reference to Rice's funeral he writes, "I had always thought of him as one of the kindest, funniest and most honorable people I knew" (p. 11).

Because it is what he lived, Himes is dealing with southern fundamentalism. I trace my roots to northern fundamentalism, so I sometimes felt that fundamentalism was being painted with too broad a brush. Not everything he accused fundamentalism as being guilty of was true for all fundamentalists. He especially deals with racism among early fundamentalists (and Southern Baptists). Though disturbing, I don't doubt what he says. It was primarily this racism that drove him away from his Christian faith. He became a prodigal before finishing high school.

There is much good historical information in this book, especially concerning America's religious evolution from puritans to neo-evangelicals. Also, I never realized the magnitude of Rice's ministry. At one time, The Sword of the Lord employed over 50 people and had a mailing list of 300,000!

Himes does a fair job of explaining what fundamentalism believes and why people would espouse such a belief. In is interesting to hear a clear explanation of the gospel from someone who doesn't believe it. Although he now considers himself a Christian again, he admits it is not historic Christianity.

If you grow up in Sword style fundamentalism you will enjoy reading this book.

The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family Review by PastoralMusings "mslapastor" (Dixie)

The Sword of The Lord
Subtitled "The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family", this book deals with the historical background which gave rise to Fundamentalism, the culture of Fundamentalism, the battles of Fundamentalism, and the relationship of all of these to the Rice family.
Andrew Himes, grandson of famed evangelist John R. Rice, writes with amazing honesty about his feelings and struggles with Fundamentalism. Each chapter opens with some sort of personal anecdote before delving into the history, happenings, ideas, and personalities of Fundamentalism.
Himes deals more with Southern, Independent Baptist Fundamentalism more than any other type. That is because he is relating all of this to his family and how they functioned in the movement.
There's much that could probably be said about the relationship between the Scotch-Irish, the Appalachian people, the Civil War, and the Ku Klux Klan to the rise of Southern Fundamentalism. I don't know that I would discount anything that Himes said in that respect. I do wish that there would have been a little more acknowledgment of the northern Fundamentalists, simply because they had a relationship to , and an influence on Southern Fundamentalists. I do understand, however, that he is seeking to relate to his family and Southern Fundamentalism.
Sadly, Southern Fundamentalism has a checkered past. In fact, that can be said about the present, also. The struggles of Southern Fundamentalism were not simply doctrinal struggles, but battles for society. Often, Southern Fundamentalists were on the wrong side of the battle, or simply ignored it in the name of evangelism. Himes speaks of how this disconnect between Christianity and human kindness hurt him and caused him to abandon Christianity for a long time.
The story is told in a moving fashion. Many times my heart was stirred because of the injustices that were chronicled. My heart was also stirred with a desire to love Christ more. With all of his flaws, John R. Rice is portrayed as a great man. Himes presents what seems to be a balanced picture of his grandfather and his influence on Fundamentalism. Rice is presented as a fighter for truth, but also a lover of his family and a man of compassion.
From the northern battles of Fundamentalism (that receive scant mention) to J. Frank Norris, William Bell Riley, William Jennings Bryan, Billy Sunday, Billy Graham, and Jerry Falwell, Himes looks at the rise and strength of Fundamentalism. He shows us how John R. Rice and family fit into the picture. His portrait of Rice is that of any man: Rice was a man of convictions and beliefs. He was also a man who learned and grew as he aged and matured.
Himes also shows how Fundamentalism and Fundamentalists reacted to Rice and his changes. We read of the separation of Fundamentalism and Evangelicalism, the separation of Rice and Graham, and the rise of Jerry Falwell and the Moral Majority.
Among the saddest of things that I read was the fact that John R. Rice, the last time he spoke at a Sword of The Lord conference, was not given the opportunity to have the impact he wished to have. After speaking to the assembly about loving one another and those who disagree with us, Rice wished to have the people sing "The Family of God", a song that emphasizes the unity of God's children. Sadly, his successor as editor of the Sword of The Lord, Curtis Hutson, prevented the distribution of cards with the words to the song, thus preventing the song from being sung. Hutson did not walk in the footsteps of Rice in regard to desiring a better relationship with those with whom he had disagreements, it seems. Rice is said to have wept because this happened.
At the end of the book, Himes speaks of having conversations with his family about Fundamentalism. He, and they, have many positive things to say about what they learned. Sadly, because of the excesses of many of the Independent Fundamental Baptists, many of Rice's descendants do not claim to be Fundamentalists. Why? Because today's Fundamentalists aren't in step with what they believe about love.
I am sure that, if the folks at the Sword of The Lord get hold of this book, there will be many ways in which they find fault with it. They will probably attempt to discredit the book and the author. I only hope that many will read this book, learn the value of a Fundamentalism that holds to the Fundamentals while loving others.
I hope that the book will show people that John R. Rice was not perfect, but that he was a man to respect, and in many ways follow. He should especially be followed in holding up the Fundamentals, as well as in his willingness to change, moderate, and learn to love more. In a day in which we are having many discussions about the direction of Fundamentalism, we should certainly look at our past to see what we can learn. The voice of this book should be one that is heard in that discussion.
In concluding, I must say that there is one large negative that looms before my eyes. Himes speaks of Fundamentalism as originally being about arcane doctrines. He also speaks of needing a faith that is driven by praxis rather than arcane doctrines. The reality is that the Fundamentalists understood that there could be no right practice without right doctrine. The problem is that many of them (and probably many of us today) did not recognize the disconnect between their doctrine and their practice.
This was one of those books that, once started, is difficult to put down. I shall award this book four stars.

The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family Review by A. Riley (USA)

I was really interested in reading this book, The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family, because there is a very long religious history in this country, my own faith history stems from it, and I know little about it. While the family focused on is the John R. Rice who was an influential fundamentalist, it begins all the way back in the very immigration to this country. This is a very comprehensive and insightful history.

I was riveted by it. I was so surprised by how much there was that I had never bothered to think about, and at the same time how much sense it all made. Himes writes in a very easy relateable way, but this is quite a dense read, which is to say there is A LOT of history to absorb. It's never dry, though, and in many ways is a page turner.

Since Himes's family was fundamentalist, he has firsthand experience of many people in the movement, and a life story of how he dealt with his own personal history. He weaves his own story into the text, beginning chapters with anecdotes and scenes from his own life and then going into more history. This is very effective, because it creates a sense of curiosity about the immediate story of Himes the man, while all along you are reading the history that was the foundation of the influences in his life.

Reading The Sword of the Lord then, with its history of fundamentalist Christianity, (including how that term went out of fashion for many evangelicals) was like turning a light on a shadowed corner of my life. Seriously, I have no way of explaining it, other than to say it was a bit like unearthing and seeing some of the roots of your life for the first time. I was fascinated by the history, by the very popular use of the Bible in extremely heated ways to support ideas on both sides of The Civil War, of the different ways faith manifested itself in the lives of people, what they valued and how that continued to shape each generation.

Himes spares no punches. Which is to say he is extremely forthright about the consequences as he sees them of the kind of faith practiced. Having said that I very much feel this book is written with a great deal of respect for the people it is about. While he may not agree with how they perceived God and what it meant to follow him, I never felt like he was condemning them either. Simply trying to paint the most accurate picture he could, a fully fleshed out messy portrait of messy humanity.

I loved The Sword of the Lord and I really feel that I recommend it to anyone at all who has an interest in the history of evangelical Christianity. I think even just history in the United States might be enough as that's a huge part of it.

The Sword of the Lord: The Roots of Fundamentalism in an American Family::Description

Christian fundamentalism in America emerged a century ago, the faith of generations of immigrants who had experienced war and revolution, removal and upheaval. The Scots-Irish who had settled the South inherited both an evangelical legacy of abolitionism and social reform on the one hand, and complicity in human slavery and racial oppression on the other. This book brings the story of fundamentalism to life through the generations of the Rice family--immigrants, soldiers, farmers, slaveowners, refugees, and preachers. This is a work of history, memoir, and personal testimony about the changing shape of a faith that seeks to transform the world. Foreword by Parker J. Palmer
